Qs: What did this GMB trip in Nicaragua meant or do for you?
this trip was a great opportunity for me to experience medicine on another level. I truly enjoyed my time in Nicaragua because of the people. Although we had long and tiring days it always felt very rewarding because the people we helped expressed their gratitude in so many ways. This trip solidified my passion for medicine and helping those in need. It also has drew me global medicine in which I'm able to make such a large impact in underserved communities. I also really appreciated the opportunity to learn about a new culture and see the beautiful countrysides of Nicaragua.
What was your favorite or funniest moment that you can highlight?
During the public health brigade we spent a lot of time doing laborous work which was very tiring. Towards the end of our day I was transporting a bucket of sand from across a road to a site we were at and a lady walking by stopped to help me and hug me. It was a very small gesture but it made such a huge impact. She expressed her thanks and went on her way. I'll never forget that lady and her kindness because her small act of kindness did a lot to lift my spirits and push me to keep working hard throughout the day.
Another recollection was during our pharmacy rotation. I was explaining medication label instructions to a patient, a lady who had been patiently waiting in a long line for hours. I caught her eye as I gave her the brown bag of medications. It was like the bag of hope had lifted her spirits, brought her renewed strength and encouragement. Our medications did so much not just for their health, but for their sense of peace.
